EU Bans Microplastics in Cosmetics: What Changes for You

The European Union has taken a historic step in the fight against plastic pollution. Through Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, adopted in September 2023, the EU banned intentionally added microplastics in products, including many cosmetics. This is one of the best pieces of news ever for those who choose cleaner and more sustainable beauty.

What was banned, and when

The regulation bans so-called synthetic polymer microparticles. In practice, this covers ingredients such as plastic microbeads used in exfoliants and loose plastic glitter.

The ban is phased in:

  • As of October 17, 2023: loose glitter and microbeads in rinse-off products (such as exfoliants).
  • In the following years (up to 2027 and beyond): leave-on products, makeup, and encapsulated fragrances, with defined transition periods.

According to the European Chemicals Agency, approximately 42,000 tonnes of microplastics were estimated to be released annually from intentionally added products alone.

Why this matters

Microplastics are a serious environmental problem: they do not degrade, ending up in oceans and the food chain. By removing them from cosmetics, the EU is tackling an avoidable source of pollution and giving a clear advantage to naturally formulated products.

At Prana Market, this validates everything we believe in. Our products prioritize natural exfoliants, zero-plastic solid cosmetics, and clean formulas, long before the law required it.
